Who are you?
Vontaine Australia is a boutique video, film and photography company based in Newcastle, NSW.

Most corporate advertising and media companies all have very similar mission statements and financial goals. We all go to university to be taught these goals in order to be successful, but where do you draw the line between cost and creativity. Our decision to be a specialised boutique film company has allowed us to be more personal, and concentrate on being creative from a purest point of view rather than a revenue stream one. Fortunately in our relatively short 12 year cycle, we have successfully maintained our ‘edgy, impactful, and forward thinking’ image from day one. It is also why our slogan is ‘No Boundaries’. It’s because we mean it and believe in the saying ‘Why do people try to think outside the box, when there is no ‘box’.

What do we do?
Our company was established in 1999, originally as a music production company. Since then we have created a number of different divisions, and we are very proud of what we have achieved in that time. Working with the likes of Silverchair, Sarah Blasko, Regurgitator, Wolfmother, Kate Miller Heidke, Little Birdy, The Veronicas, Spiderbait, The Cat Empire… the list goes on. We have a team of people who direct, film, edit and produce client’s visual collections.

What inspired you to join Renew Newcastle?
I originally saw the Marcus Westbury on Vimeo by accident, and decided to investigate. With over 10 years experience with working with government funded community projects, we were excited to get involved, and hopefully use our skills to help our the creative community at the same time.

What are you doing in your space?
Vontaine Australia is now our primary business, split into two departments; Vontaine Media Group Australia (VMG) and Vontaine Fashion Australia (VFA). After 10 months in our space, we have set it up now for both high-end cinema and professional fashion photography. We have one of the most powerful cinema editing suites in the Hunter. We have painted it and dressed it up quite differently to what it was previously. We eventually will start hiring out the photography space once we have the right gear and equipment suited for professionals. At this time, we won’t be hiring out our cinema suite, but may in the future.

What was your space used as before?
As far as I know, it was a call centre for breast feeding mums.
