about The Project Space – The Renewal of Mr Jones

Who are you?
My name is Rachel Milne and I am a full time artist.

What do you do?
I am a painter, I paint in oil on board from life and I mainly concentrate on portraits and interiors. I was also a finalist in the 2014 Kilgour Prize at Newcastle Regional Gallery.

Tell us more about the Project Space
I am very excited to be artist in residence at the beautiful, iconic 185 Hunter Street.

Thanks to Renew Newcastle I have had unprecedented access to all the floors of the old department store and am creating an exhibition of oil on board paintings of every abandoned corner. Two aspects of this building really interest me, firstly the historic significance and the amount of memories it holds for so many Novacastrians and secondly the chance to exhibit in context, so to exhibit paintings of the building in the building itself.

It’s a seductive space, abandoned by David Jones in 2011, not a awful lot has changed inside in 4 years, the changing rooms on the various floors, hairdressers and butcher’s rack still in place. Newcastle city is rapidly changing and I wanted to record these spaces before they change forever, to create a 2015 snapshot of 185 Hunter Street, one of many beautiful buildings in our city centre.

Are you having an opening night?
Yes, on Wednesday the 18th of March from 6pm-8pm in the Project Space.
