March 2015 – UPDATE: We are happy to say that The Art Project by Andrew Dennis will continue on with the same ideas developed for Renew Newcastle. That is an open working studio, children’s art classes and art gallery. Andrew will be moving to a new space located on the mezzanine level of Market Square, Newcastle Mall. From Andrew: I am very pleased and grateful to have had three active months with Renew Newcastle and I am proud of how The Art Project by Andrew Dennis activated the space on Wolfe Street as an interactive and visually appealing place of interest. This short time has been challenging and exciting. It has given me the opportunity to push my potential as an artist and to explore three business ideas and there potential.“ Fantastic news Andrew!
Feb 2015: Listen to Andrew Dennis talk about his experience as a Renew Newcastle project with Nick Gerber from 1233ABC Newcastle
Who are you?
I am an experienced fine artist who specialises in painting and drawing.
What do you do?
I create vivid and engaging paintings and drawings that are inspired by both the natural and built environments with a particular focus on colour and line.
What inspired you to get involved in Renew Newcastle?
Renew Newcastle has created an energy and excitement that inspired me to transition from my home-based studio to a more public space where I can both exhibit and work in an open studio.
What are you doing in your new space?
The Art Project is a high exposure exhibition space and working studio that hosts constantly evolving exhibitions with weekly art classes for primary aged students. The space is designed to be a welcoming area where people can visit to see the works but also experience an active studio. The art classes are designed to teach children a range of fine art skills including painting, print making, collage and sculpture with an emphasis on drawing. The ability to draw confidently is a fundamental skill for any artist practicing Visual Arts in any form. All classes are conducted in an atmosphere of fun, allowing students to enjoy the process of making art. Class commencement dates to be confirmed shortly.
Tell us about the space – what was its previous use? Anything unique about it? Your response to the space?
The space is part of the growing Wolfe Street Renew artist precinct. The shop front has been previously used for various businesses including a physiotherapist and travel agent. The large window areas make it perfect to capture the afternoon sun and enjoy some time relaxing in the space.
