Who are you?

We are an inclusive and friendly community of Newcastle artists. The Stepping Stone Studios community is comprised of artists of all ages, mediums and backgrounds. We specialise in the use of both 2 and 3 dimensional art mediums. We like to think of ourselves as a stepping stone between study and ‘the real world’, gaining first-hand experience in making and selling our art.

Previously residing in the former Go-Lo space at Market Square on Hunter Street Mall, we are now located in Wolfe Studios.

What do you do?
In our current space we create and sell our art. It is a cosy, private studio where we are able to work freely and also have a bit of room to sit down and relax with a nice cup of tea. We are open by appointment for anyone wanting to come and see our works in progress as well as completed artworks.

What inspired you to get involved in Renew Newcastle?
Over the past few years we have watched the city centre transform into a hive of activity with the hard work of Renew Newcastle. After attending an opening of a fellow shop (Studio Bliss) we were encouraged by friends to apply for our space and got it! Since then we haven’t looked back and are incredibly thankful to Renew Newcastle for this amazing opportunity. We are now in our second space and still loving it.

What was the space’s previous use?
153 Hunter St is a lovely multi-level building providing numerous people and groups with spaces to work in. From what we have gathered each floor has previously been both apartment living and office spaces. We occupy one room on the second floor which has some lovely high ceilings and a limited view of the water! It is a nice and peaceful place to work.
