Stuart has “graduated” to doing a PhD at the University of Newcastle, and since he’s classified as a researcher, he has been provided with a suite. He’s also lecturing at the Sydney campus of the New York Film Academy two days/week. The feature film which he spent the past couple of years making is now in its final stages of post-production and is expected to be completed mid-2015.

“Having the Renew space allowed me the freedom to pursue large-scale filmmaking projects without the burden of finding hundreds of dollars a week in rent. As a result, I’ve managed to complete a 7-episode tv series which shot in Russia and Ukraine, and sell it internationally. I’m also close to completing a feature film, shot on location in Newcastle and in Transylvania, Romania.

It’s been an honour to be associated with such an outstanding urban renewal project, and while I’m sad to see my studio go, it’s nice to see its potential realised these past 6 years. Thank you for this tremendous opportunity, and best of luck for the future!”

What do you do?
I make films and music.

What inspired you to get involved in Renew Newcastle?
A friend sent me a link about the project, and it sounded great. Trying to edit films and mix music in my bedroom isn’t much fun, so I joined the Facebook group, sent in an application, as was fortunate enough to be selected into Round 1.

What are you doing in your new space?
I’m mixing an album I recorded in Berlin. Check out the work-in-progress here:

I’m also doing freelance jobs as a filmmaker. Right now I’m working on a pilot for a tv show I’ve been hired to direct/produce.

Finally, my room in The Clinic is my production office for my 2nd feature film, which I will be shooting this year.

Tell us about the space …
The Clinic’s former use as an optometry clinic means that we have numerous individual rooms. It’s great to be surrounded by other creative people, as we can all feed off each other.  My requirements are quite simple. I need a desk, a chair, my Macbook Pro and about 2 Terabytes of external hard drives. I’m running Logic 8 and Final Cut Pro.
