Renew Newcastle has offered me an incredible opportunity as an emerging designer. The retail space that I occupied at The Emporium has provided an opportunity to market my brand via visual merchandising, Renew events and direct sales. The high exposure of my brand has allowed me to test the validity of my designs. This has stood me in good stead for developing a successful business model in the future.

Who are you? I’m Renee Verdon, Head Designer for the women’s wear label Vous. I’ve spent the last 4 years studying fashion design at the The Fashion Design Studio, Sydney Institute which has seen coveted designers such as Dion Lee, Romance Was Born, Alex Perry, Lisa Ho and Akira Isogawa grace its halls. Upon graduation  I decided to launch my own label and thus Vous was created.

What do you do? Over the past two years I have focussed on creating a unique boutique feel to the space. The VOUS label focusses on providing Newcastle women with high quality limited edition pieces of clothing.

What inspired you to get involved in Renew Newcastle? Over the last year I have largely been working from home bringing my label and brand together. I was investigating ways to get my product noticed by our local community when I discovered Renew Newcastle. I had been a frequent visitor to the Newcastle CBD retail precinct throughout my teenage years and remember it being such a wonderful place to visit for a day of shopping. I’m now very excited to see such creative and rejuvenating projects popping up throughout this area as it develops a new identity. I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to have a retail space in the CBD. It’s a good feeling to be a small part of the regeneration of the city centre.

Tell us about the space – what was its previous use? Anything unique about it? Your response to the space? Vous is located within The Emporium– previously the iconic David Jones building located in Hunter St Mall. It’s an amazing building with so much Newcastle history locked within its walls. You can find my clothing within the beautiful space belonging to I and Mine.
