about Tipsy Orchestra

UPDATE DEC 2011

Rhea has relocated to Melbourne to commence study of fashion at RMIT. Her designs and skills will only sharpen, and we look forward to where the Tipsy Orchestra will create its next crazy carnivale!

Tipsy Orchestra is a boutique/studio where art and fashion can be found. From clocks to incredible frocks, the products exude attitude, and you could never find another like it.

Local and National designers grace the shelves alongside house label Tipsy Orchestra, an entertaining flamboyant and rich coloured Women’s range made in store. There is strong emphasis on recycling, ethical and sustainable practices. Artists involved support causes such as WSPA, World Society for the Protection of Animals and JAAGO, Free Children’s Education in the slums of Bangladesh.

Events are held on the First Friday of each month with new visual artists exhibiting work, live music, entertainers, bubbles and snacks.

Tipsy Orchestra design label and boutique is the work of 23 year old fashion designer Rhea Newton Brooke.

We asked Rhea to tell us about her inspiration for her work and the project…I have always had much love for the Arts, raised in the creative community of the Blue Mountains, Brisbane and Byron Bay. For the past 3 ½ years I have resided in Newcastle, finding inspiration in the mass Arts movement.

At last! At age 15 I found the power of fashion, fell in love and have persued the industry since. I studied couture and modelling under the guidance of my idol and friend, Doug Denham. In 2009 I collaborated to form Junkie Collective, a group of young Novocastrians creating projects such as sustainable fashion/art/graphics and photography.

I attended a conference when Renew Newcastle was at its beginning. I thought it was a brilliant scheme and studied small business so I could get involved. We were accepted into Renew Newcastle in 2010 and Before It Began was born.

Before It Began Fashion/Art/Studio stocked over 30 local designers and had monthly events. The store was a success and my two other collaborators Jzhonnie and Bonnie have now established themselves with a commercial lease on Darby street. Being involved with Before It Began gave me a realistic view of the fashion industry, and I now see the importance more than ever to have a sustainable outlet, and inspire others to do the same.

I launched my fashion label Tipsy Orchestra in Newcastle Fashion Week 2010, confirming that fashion design is my calling. I have real passion for fashion, Protection of Animals and conserving the environment, so I continue on my journey to entwine my 3 loves and joyfully bring you, Tipsy Orchestra.

Tell us about your design for the shop…The first time I saw this space I screamed, it is incredible and I absolutely love it! I worked in the space for 6 months with the Before It Began project, and am now over the moon to be able to make it my own. Gold decadence will drip from the walls.
