Who are you?
I am Sophia Flegg- visual artist and designer and boss man for King Cobra, a unisex clothing label.
What do you do?
I am a visual artist working with larger scale paintings, using vivid colour and emotionally charged subject matter. I am also launching a sister project ‘King Cobra’ which is a unisex clothing label that utilises my own fabric designs. Between projects I also create video projects.
What inspired you to get involved in Renew Newcastle?
I have been involved with Renew for years now, owning and operating The Woods gallery, Smack Bang store in The Emporium and exhibiting my artwork through The Project Space. I live in the CBD and see huge potential for creative communities to really revitalise the place, plus I love a bit of a DIY challenge- all of which Renew caters for.
What are you doing in your new space?
I have my own studio place in Wolfe Street Studios, which I set up off the back of my last exhibition; Red Eye. I use the second floor as a painting, sculpting and designing space.
Tell us about the space.
I have no idea what my space was before, but it has a safe so I like to assume it was really important. Currently I have covered the floor in fake grass to avoid spillage. The safe now holds my finished artworks. The rest of the space uses retro furniture and found objects for seats, shelving and other cabinetry to help in the painting process.
