Who are you?
Ryan Fitzgerald.Recent Fine Art Honours graduate from the University of Newcastle.
What do you do?
I am a photomedia-based artist whose primary process of image-making is wet-plate collodion. My home studio space and darkroom is small and cramped, and is almost unworkable when using large format equipment. Utilising studio space provided by Renew Newcastle enables me to have access to a large space and darkroom that rivals (even exceeds) a professional practice.
What are you doing in your space?
I am using the studio to photograph and the darkroom to process the wet plates. I shoot with the intention of exhibiting and experimenting. I have an office space which currently I use to store gear and will soon add other post-processing facilities.
Tell us about the space – what was its previous use? Anything unique about it? Your response to the space?
It is very big! Having had to use a cramped space and a very makeshift darkroom at home for so long, the opportunity to work in such a large and well-equipped space is a dream.
