Renew Newcastle operates out of a light and airy, red-carpeted office space overlooking the Hunter St Mall. Renew HQ, as it is known, has desk space for our staff and volunteers; storage for the collection of tools, cleaning gear, hardware and array of “useful things” to help us get in and out of properties; as well as a small meeting space. The office also displays former General Manager Marni Jackson’s colourful collection of 70’s landscape prints.
The organisation borrows this property under the same 30 day temporary agreement as our projects. After 3 ½ years among the 1960’s creamed-cheese low ceilings and wood panelling of the Morgan St Church in July 2012 Renew Newcastle offices have moved to loftier digs.
We’re still in temporary office space donated by property partner The GPT Group, but this time in the the lavender-pinky coloured wedding cake style Municipal Building, built in 1884 in the Victorian Free Classical style by architect P Bennett.
Newcastle City Council heritage database tells us it is “one in a series of ‘Municipal’ buildings erected by Newcastle Borough Council in the late 19th century. The character of the Mall owes much to this fine group of buildings, a series of developments created for commercial leasing.”
The black & white photo used here was posted by Trevor Paine in the Lost Newcastle facebook group, showing the building in its early years, with a verandah and awning atop ‘R. Langer’s Books & Stationers’.
Location: The building is on the Harbour side of the Hunter St Mall, just near the pedestrian overpass to The Brewery. Other businesses on the Mall aspect of the building are Lowes and Archer & Paige.
We share the first floor level with offices for Newcastle Youth Orchestra, Write for Impact and Ferlix Transport.
Our entry doors are on Market St, at the corner of Keightley Lane.
