Newcastle Youth Orchestra is an exciting ensemble of young, local musicians, committed to quality orchestral training and concerts. The auditioned members rehearse weekly throughout the school term toward four public concerts and chamber music projects. Newly formed in January 2013, the orchestra has already seen collaborations in promoting the talents of local and emerging soloists, artists, puppeteers, writers and composers.

What do you do?
Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Dr Ian Cook leads the orchestra from 2017. No stranger to the podium, orchestral pedagogy or indeed the Newcastle community, Ian is a home grown resource with international success.  Joining the organisation also in 2017, NYO Kids Conductor Rodney Wikstrom and Manager Sally Ebert also join the dynamic trio, and together are responsible for the artistic and conceptual direction of concert programs, community collaborations and the well-being and quality education of the students.

The organisation is supported by a dedicated team of Board members, Volunteers, Parents and Friends.

What inspired you to get involved in Renew Newcastle? The orchestra was welcomed to the Newcastle community with an astounding amount of support. The Newcastle Museum eagerly became our rehearsal venue, each week allowing NYO to open its doors to the public during rehearsals. Consequently, the NYO team grew rapidly and the need for a space in the city centre for operations became apparent. As NYO is a Not For Profit organisation, Renew Newcastle has made this possible.

Our space in the Hunter St Mall is a hub for the Manager, Administration team and Board to ensure the successful operations of the orchestra. It provides a space for the general public to visit, and for our prospective patrons and collaborators to meet and discuss. Previously an office and waiting room for Casey Nursing College, NYO has transformed the space to be a hive of artistic operations and activity. From time to time, you may even catch members of the orchestra rehearsing in the window space as they prepare for upcoming chamber concerts!
