Who are you?
I’m Newcastle-based designer Melanie White. After working in music and advertising, I discovered a passion for fashion design and pattern-making. This passion led me to begin creating my own garments and accessories, and from this I&MINE was born.
What do you do?
I&MINE use limited and unusual fabrics to create handmade ready-to-wear classic contemporary clothing and accessories.
Officially launched in 2016, I&MINE is for the spirited, the fiery and the fearless.
What inspired you to get involved with Renew Newcastle?
Renew Newcastle have helped so many small businesses getting started and offer a support like no other. I wanted to be part of a creative community and work next to others with the same goals and appreciation for handmade pieces. Renew has given me such a great opportunity, allowing me to launch my label and open my own retail store. I now have face-to-face communication with my customers, gain valuable feedback for my business, and continue to grow as a designer.
What are you doing in your new space?
The space is an opportunity for my label I&MINE to have a flagship retail store and sell directly to customers. The space also doubles as my studio, where I concept and create my designs, and pattern-make and cut my garments and accessories.
Tell us about the space – what was its previous use? Anything unique about it? Your response to the space?
I&MINE is located at Shop 2, The Emporium, 185 Hunter Street Newcastle – formerly David Jones – and sits at the Perkins Street end. I’ve created a contemporary look and feel for my space, which compliments my label.
