Eleanor Hanlon is a visual artist working across sculpture, performance and installation. She has recently pronounced the shores of Newcastle home, having moved from Sydney and lived and worked the past year in France. Eleanor is interested in the construction of lore, myth and truth, especially the absurd and harmonious. She explores pattern and ritual in how people identify with places and objects, and the imagines the collective memory that might accumulate here. A lover of metalsmithing, Eleanor uses precious metals and collected things to make sculptures and performances that acknowledge these relationships and stories. Says Eleanor of her decision to apply for a Renew Newcastle space, “Initiatives like Renew Newcastle helped draw me back to the city of Newcastle. It has opened up the city for creative professionals, connecting them through a network of productive pockets of space. My new studio above Hunter Street Mall is neighboured with architects, designers, artists and film makers. This cosy car-sized studio is my laboratory for getting my hands dirty and testing ideas. A much needed place to ruminate, culminate and create.”
