Who are you?
My Name is Dylan Smyth and I’m photographer/bookmaker who occasionally dabbles in some illustration as well.

What do you do?
I work in contemporary photography, exhibiting prints and small publications in art galleries. I have a strong interest in creating self-published, affordable and accessible print media. Much of my work centres around Newcastle including my publication Coal River, an ongoing series of local architecture illustrations and a collaborative project which I developed and direct titled 2hrsnorth which involves local artists photographing all the diverse suburbs of Newcastle to create a unique set of books documenting the entire city.

What inspired you to get involved in Renew Newcastle?
I’ve been following Renew since finding it on my return to Newcastle after living abroad in 2010. In that time my daily commute (walk, ride) to work has been through the Hunter Street Mall and it’s just amazing how much it'[missing asset] s improved thanks in no small part to Renew. After biding my time for all these years my own creative development has got to a point where I can join in and build a great network of fellow artists and creatives along the way, yay.

Project profile
Through Renew I now have a great studio space where I can leave the rest of my jobs and life at the door and get stuck into the creative, and sometime not so creative (editing, proposals…blgghh) parts of being an artist. Within the space I can have a darkroom, work on my digital editing, layout ideas as they progress and generally just create! One project in development at the moment involves photographing models I’ve hand built so having the space needed to work on these over time is just great and way more efficient than working from home.

Tell us about the space
My space is on the first level of a building on the corner of Wolfe and Hunter Streets (right beside The Emporium (the former David Jones building). I have a fantastic room overlooking the Mall that affords me some truly great people watching while I bask in the sun that comes through my great high windows. I share the level with the crew from Grasshopper Productions and a whole bunch more great creative types fill the levels higher up the building also, so it makes for some great opportunities to collaborate or get feedback on my work as it develops.
