Who are you?
My name is Sara, I am originally from New Zelaland and have lived in Sydney for the past eight years. I moved to the lake 6 weeks ago. I love concrete, copper, dogs, scarves, colour, collaboration, sustainable practices, and the interior design of Yulli’s restaurant. Dubbleyou is about creating simple designs from interesting, locally sourced materials. My philosophy when it comes to designing is to create products that bring joy with as little impact on the environment as possible.
What do you do?
I create a range of homewares drawing on my love for materials and objects. I have a screen-printer, seamstress and laser-cutter and our little team produces all the designs locally. I have spent the past four years working as graphic designer so a lot of my products have graphic elements. Dubbleyou began in 2011 at a Finders Keepers market and now, three years later I am the proud new occupier of a Renew Newcastle space—yay!
What inspired you to get involved in Renew Newcastle?
When I saw the Renew Newcastle project I was so excited, it was such an amazing opportunity, especially since I had just moved to Newcastle from Sydney. I can’t wait to meet new customers and other creative people.
What are you doing in your new space?
After painting the walls, stripping the carpet and fixing up the concrete that is currently hidden underneath, we are dividing the space into three areas, a gallery, studio and shop. We want people to come into the space and see what we do and be a little bit nosey. Dubbleyou will be sharing this space with Süko Gallery.
Tell us about the space – what was its previous use?
The space was being used for storage, it is a nice big space, it was a tiny bit overwhelming at first but now know what we want to use it for, it is just perfect.
