about Courtney Collins

UPDATE JANUARY 2015 In nine months in the Renew writers’ den I have been able to make solid progress on my second novel The Walkman Mix. I’m now at the pointy end of the project with a deadline approaching so I’m going into the cave of my new office at home. I’ve loved feeling connected to such a supportive and positive movement and I am continually inspired by the work that comes out of the Renew creative spaces.

Who are you?
I am a writer. My first novel, The Burial, has been shortlisted for numerous prizes including the Stella Award and the NSW Premier’s Award for New Fiction. It has now been sold in eleven countries, including the US, Germany, Spain and Japan. The novel has been optioned for a feature film by Pure Pictures/Renegade Films.

What inspired you to get involved in Renew Newcastle?
As an initiative, Renew Newcastle is a gift. The essential ingredients for me to create are space + time. And this is exactly what it offers.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on a new novel – The Walkman Mix.

Tell us about the space – what was its previous use? I don’t know what it was in its past life. But it’s like a beautiful blank page to me and I’m scribbling all over it. Well, not literally. I’ve put up butcher’s paper on the scribble walls. In short, I L.O.V.E. love it.
