PROJECT UPDATE: Ben has continued printmaking as part of his role as a Design Researcher at the University of Newcastle. He currently works from The Roost Creative developing his third comic book project, Ghost Beach, due for release later this year. He eats well and exercises regularly.
Who are you?
Ben Mitchell has been an active freelance graphic designer working in Newcastle for five years, and was heavily involved in the production of Renew Newcastle shared studio The Roost Creative. In 2014 he began releasing an annual comic book project named Storm Clouds, working with a small risograph printing press in Northcote, Victoria.
What do you do?
2015 will see Ben putting freelance design on the backburner to open his own public studio and risograph press, BENNY RIZZO, to create a closer creative connection to his projects by becoming more involved in production by working in isolation, and to teach the people of Newcastle about risograph printing.
What are you doing in your space?
After an initial period of experimentation with the print production equipment, BENNY RISO will open its doors as a public printing service specialising in art prints and zines to the masses – a market that is heavily undersaturated in Newcastle and even in the greater NSW region. Working closely with Imagetec, the national distributor of RISO products, the studio will host regular exhibitions and workshops in celebration of the risograph medium.
