Shannon Hartigan Images
Shannon Hartigan is a photographer from Maitland. His work captures the beauty of this land we love to call home, Australia. His passion for landscape photography was ignited during a trip to Central Australia and the Top End in 2003. Inspired by the beautiful scenery he set out with a Pentax Film SLR, started snapping and hasn’t looked back.
Since then Shannon has upgraded to digital but (frustrated by the inability to capture a wide enough shot) has reverted back to film in the form of a Hasselblad Xpan panoramic camera, which produces stunning wide angle panoramas.
What do you do? My main focus is landscape photography and also custom picture framing
What inspired you to get involved in Renew Newcastle? I heard about it through a friend, it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up, a retail outlet for my work in Newcastle basically rent free. It doesn’t get much better than that. Leasing a shop elsewhere simply would’ve been out of the question financially. Apart from that I think it’s a great initiative to get involved in to try and bring some life back into a tired and run down Newcastle.
What are you doing in your new space? I’m using the shopfront as a gallery/shop for my work ranging from small mounted images to large framed images and canvases. There is also a back room which is an ideal workspace for mounting and framing pictures.
Tell us about the space – what was its previous use? Anything unique about it? Your response to the space? Previously used as an optus shop, I immediately liked it when marni initially showed me, it’s ideal for a gallery, it has a full glass front and long white walls, I think I was pretty lucky with this shop, there was no repairs or renovations to do so basically all I had to do was fix some picture railing to the wall and start hanging my work.
