Crooked Crow Couture is a boutique and studio space dedicated to the ‘Art of Accessorizing’. Couturier Lorraine Hollis offers original handcrafted wearable textile art in the form of masks, millinery, veils and accessories, specialising in enchanting bridal pieces.

We asked Lorri what inspired her to get involved in Renew Newcastle?

Over the years I have been involved with other Renew Newcastle projects on a small scale having my clothes designs in Before it Began and Tipsy Orchestra and millinery in Mad Hatter Millinery.

I feel it is an amazing opportunity to allow artists to build up a business with out the crippling overheads, and prevents the isolation that comes with being an artist. It also gives your business a professional face, and exposure that is unachievable from a domestic location. Hopefully it will provide a spring board to a whole new world of opportunities.

What are you doing in your new space? Are you just showcasing your own creations work, or other makers' work as well?

I love the amazing space and the room to create, I am producing my own designs as well as consignment pieces and I have a small selection of other artists work as well. A make up artist and stylist will be available to help clients gain the complete look. Once the back studio is completely set up D.I.Y. classes in textiles and millinery will commence.

Tell us about the space – what was its previous use?

Our new home is an incredible building, we are above Renew Newcastle project The Odditorium and the 3rd Renew project in the space following ‘Tipsy Orchestra’ & ‘Before it Began’. Before being handed over to Renew Newcastle it was occupied by Diabolik Tattoo Studios so it has truly been a creative space for quiet some time.

Update 2 Feb 2012: After just 5 weeks in the Thorn St location, Crooked Crow has to fly to a new nest to make way for a commercial tenant. Lorri is setting up the new shop at 19 Wolfe St and expects to be open and trading in the next couple of weeks. During the relocation period, call first to check on her availability.
