Renew Newcastle was rewarded yesterday for helping to turn Newcastle around when it was named Best Organisation at the 2010 Newcastle Business Club awards.
Marni Jackson accepted the award on behalf of the non-profit organisation, which brings to life vacant retail premises in Newcastle.
The organisation has operated for only two years. In the Newcastle CBD alone, it has turned more than 30 vacant shops into homes for artists, cultural projects and community groups.
‘‘We’ve actually had quite a few of our temporary occupants forced to move on, which is great, because that means more long-term leases are coming into the city,’’ Ms Jackson said.
Hunter Surf Lifesaving chief executive Rhonda Scruton was named Best Individual yesterday for her outstanding work in the lifesaving community.
Ms Scruton was instrumental in developing nationally accredited training programs, and under her care the Hunter branch has won branch of the year three times.
